Careers at PBIS
Careers Provision at PBIS is designed to prioritise the individual needs of our students and support them in planning their future pathways.
All students across year groups will benefit from careers-related education and development through PSHE or dedicated Careers lessons. For KS5 students, weekly Careers lessons will cover relevant and practical topics to prepare them for their next steps.
Students in Year 11 and above will receive one-on-one guidance tailored to their aspirations, with a particular focus on Year 12 and 13 students to ensure they are fully equipped for life beyond PBIS.
Work-related learning opportunities will be offered to certain year groups, providing valuable real-world experience.
Additionally, we will continue to strengthen our collaborations with external agencies, including universities, embassies, and organisations, to enhance the guidance and support available to our students.
Future pathways curriculum
Our Year 12 and 13 Future Pathways curriculum promises to:
- Develop transferable skills that students can take with them between subjects, into the outside world, university, the workplace and beyond.
- Develop students’ curiosity about careers and what is available to them.
- Provide students with opportunities to develop and get better through reflection and target setting.
- Help students stay informed and up to date with opportunities available to them through universities, colleges, scholarships and careers.
- Provide opportunities for students to collaborate with their peers whilst learning about relevant issues.
- Provide lessons that are well-prepared and resourced, engaging and varied.
student support and guidance
In addition to the before mentioned, we offer:
- One-to-one careers meetings where students can talk about their futures, ask questions, receive help with applications, or discuss anything else to do with their next steps and future pathways.
- A Google Classroom online platform for all Year 11, 12 and 13 students. This is used to share any upcoming events, such as webinars or external speakers, as well as in-school career events that are on offer.
- A ‘Careers Clinic’ takes place every Thursday between 1:00 - 1:25 pm, where students are invited to come to the Head of Careers’ office for friendly and informal advice on universities, applications, interviews, careers, etc.
- External speakers will provide talks and presentations throughout the year, for example, at specific universities or regarding specific subjects or courses.
Whole school careers week
One of the highlights of our academic year is our annual Careers Week. During this event, students across all year groups take part in a variety of activities.
Activities include:
- Year 10 Careers Day - students come to school dressed in professional attire, take part in a panel interview with guest speakers; attend workshops from CV writing to personal branding, and most importantly, they will begin to think about their next steps and future aspirations.
- Year 9 students will take part in an iGCSE Taster Day where they get to try out iGCSE-style lessons in order to prepare them for the option choices process.
- PBIS staff members share their own career journeys during lunchtime presentations and door posters.
- PSHE and/or tutor time activities for all year groups will be careers-themed.
- Careers Week assemblies for KS3 and KS4/5 students will highlight an important theme in careers education.
Careers Week culminates in a Careers Fair, whereby numerous universities, education organisations, agencies, and embassies will be available for students and other members of our community to visit, collect information, ask questions, and start preparing for their futures.
