Working in Lao

Lao, situated in Southeast Asia and bordered by Thailand, Vietnam, China, Burma (Myanmar), and Cambodia, features a rich heritage and breathtaking natural beauty. Renowned for its warm-hearted people and serene environment, Laos has one of the lowest crime rates in Southeast Asia.

Vientiane, the capital of Lao, is a small yet charming city. Approximately 86 different languages are spoken in Vientiane, with Lao (or Laotian) being the national language of the country. The city showcases a blend of both Oriental and Occidental architectural influences.

Eating

Vientiane’s riverside is the heart of the city's dining scene, offering a lively mixed of experiences. You can find everything from relaxed eateries on stilts overlooking the Mekong River to vibrant sidewalk spots, displaying a variety of Thai and Southeast Asian dishes. Dining options in the city range from fine dining to street food carts, reflecting its rich mix of cultures and flavours.

Transport

Exploring Vientiane is convenient on foot if you are near the city center, or by bicycle for those seeking a bit more adventure. For longer trips, you can take the famous tuk-tuk or book a traditional taxi through the 'Loca' app. Since public transport is limited, long term residents often choose their own mode of transport, with scooters and a variety of new or used vehicles being popular choices. In Laos, remember to drive on the right-hand side of the road.

Weather

Vientiane enjoys a tropical climate with dry and wet seasons. Temperatures typically range from warm to hot, with humid days marking the arrival of the southwest monsoon in May or June. The rainy season lasts until October, followed by the cooler and drier northeast monsoon.

From November to February, Vientiane experiences its most pleasant sunny days, before temperatures rise again during March, April and May.
